When to Consider an Assessment

Signs Your Child May Benefit From a Speech-Language Assessment.

Children develop communication skills at different rates. A speech-language assessment may be helpful when concerns about speech, language, fluency, social communication, or overall communication persist or affect a child’s participation at home, at school, or in the community.

How We Help

Our Therapy Approach & Techniques

Every therapy plan is tailored to your child's strengths, developmental stage, and communication goals. We combine evidence-based techniques with engaging activities that encourage meaningful progress.

Our approach may include:

Your Journey Starts

What Happens During the Assessment

The assessment helps us understand your child's communication strengths, challenges, and developmental needs so we can create a personalized therapy plan.

01

Parent Consultation

We begin by discussing your concerns, your child’s developmental and communication history, previous assessments, and your family’s priorities.

02

Informal Speech-Language Evaluation

The Registered Speech-Language Pathologist evaluates the areas most relevant to your child’s needs. Informal and age-appropriate evaluation methods are selected according to the child’s individual profile.

03

Verbal Feedback and Goal Setting

The SLP discusses the initial findings with the family and develops preliminary treatment goals based on the child’s strengths, needs, and family priorities.

04

Informal Initial Evaluation Report

An informal written evaluation report is generally provided to clients following the initial evaluation (which usually requires approximately 30 minutes of additional billable time). An additional report may not be required if the child has a relevant assessment from the past six months, or if the parent specifically declines it.

05

Personalised Recommendations and Home Strategies

Families receive individualised recommendations, therapy options, and practical strategies to support communication between sessions.

(Note: Formal Speech-Language Assessments: A formal standardised assessment (e.g., PLS-5, CELF Preschool) and a comprehensive diagnostic report are separate services from the informal initial evaluation. These generally require 4 to 6 hours for administration, scoring, and report preparation, and involve different costs.)

Expected Outcomes

Goals Speech Therapy May Support.

Every child’s communication profile and progress are different. Therapy goals are individualized and may change over time according to the child’s development, needs, and family priorities.

Clearer speech

Stronger language skills

Increased confidence

Better classroom participation

Improved social interactions

Greater independence

When Should a Child Have a Speech-Language Assessment?

Families may seek a speech-language assessment whenever they have concerns about their child’s speech, language, fluency, social communication, or overall ability to communicate. A formal diagnosis is not required to contact our clinic. An initial evaluation can help identify the child’s strengths and determine the most appropriate next steps.

FAQs

Common Questions About Our Pediatric Speech Therapy

Have a question before booking? Here are the questions we hear most often from families and adults across Greater Vancouver and BC.

01 Do I need a doctor's referral for speech therapy in BC?

No referral is required. Parents can book a free consultation directly, and we'll guide you through next steps from there.

No, MSP doesn't cover private speech-language pathology services in BC. Coverage typically comes through extended health benefits, funding programs like CYSN or the Autism Funding Unit, or private payment. See our Funding & Coverage section above for details.

Yes. Virtual speech therapy uses the same evidence-based techniques as in-home sessions, with the added benefit of practicing directly in your child's familiar environment. Many families across BC, particularly outside Greater Vancouver, rely on it as their primary option.

If you're within our Greater Vancouver service area, in-home therapy lets your child practice in their own space with hands-on support. If you're elsewhere in BC, virtual therapy gives you the same clinical care through secure online sessions. We can help you decide during your free consultation.

There's no fixed starting age. Many families begin as early as 18 months if language milestones seem delayed, though older children benefit just as much from starting whenever a concern comes up.

This depends entirely on your child's needs, goals, and how consistently strategies are practiced between sessions. We'll give you an honest sense of progress at each stage rather than a fixed timeline upfront.

Children aged 0 to 5 may qualify for free speech-language services through their local public health unit, though wait times can be long. Our private in-home and virtual services are available without a waitlist for families who want to start sooner.
