Skills, Not Struggles

What Is Behavioural Therapy for Children?

Some children find the world genuinely harder to navigate. Not because something is wrong with them, but because the skills most of us pick up automatically, like managing frustration, making friends, or following a new routine, need a little more guidance to develop.

Behavioural therapy supports children in building those skills. It focuses on teaching, not restricting: teaching how to communicate needs, manage big emotions, connect with peers, and participate confidently in daily life. Family involvement is central to the process, because the real progress happens at home, at school, and everywhere in between.

Recognising the Moments

Signs Your Child May Benefit From Behavioural Therapy

Early support gives children the tools to thrive sooner. If any of these patterns sound familiar, a conversation with a behavioural therapist is a strong first step.

Frequent Tantrums or Meltdowns

Intense emotional reactions that are hard to calm, even in safe and familiar environments.

Difficulty Following Instructions

Struggles to complete multi-step requests at home or in the classroom, even with reminders.

Aggressive Behaviours

Hitting, biting, or throwing that signals the child needs new tools for expressing distress.

Challenges With Emotional Regulation

Difficulty identifying, naming, or managing emotions in ways expected for their age.

Difficulty With Transitions or Routine Changes

High distress when activities end, plans change, or the daily schedule shifts unexpectedly.

Social Interaction Challenges

Limited or one-sided play, trouble making friends, or feeling left out in group settings.

Limited Communication Skills

Fewer words, phrases, or social language than peers, leading to frustration or withdrawal.

Difficulty Participating at School or Daycare

Consistent reports from teachers about behaviour, focus, or participation concerns.

Helping Liam Navigate Big Emotions

Nine-year-old Liam experienced frequent emotional outbursts and struggled with transitions at school and home. These challenges often led to frustration, disrupted routines, and difficulty maintaining positive relationships with peers.

Working closely with Liam and his family, Aria Integrated Care implemented evidence-based behavioural strategies that helped him develop emotional regulation skills, improve communication, and build positive coping mechanisms. Today, Liam manages transitions more successfully and enjoys stronger social connections.

Common Questions About Our SLP Services

New to behavioural therapy? These are the questions families ask us most often. Clear, honest answers to help you decide what is right for your child.

01 What is behavioural therapy for children?

Behavioural therapy helps children develop skills for managing emotions, communicating needs, connecting with others, and navigating daily routines. It identifies what is driving a behaviour and teaches the child more effective ways to respond.

Common signs include frequent meltdowns, difficulty following instructions, aggressive behaviours, and challenges with social interaction or transitions. If these patterns affect your child's daily life, an assessment is a good starting point.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is one type of behavioural therapy. At Aria Integrated Care, we use a broader range of evidence-based approaches, including Positive Behaviour Support, which centres the child's quality of life alongside skill development.

Yes. We provide in-home behavioural therapy across Greater Vancouver, including Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, North Vancouver, and surrounding communities. In-home sessions mean your child is supported in the environment where real challenges actually occur.

Yes. We offer virtual behavioural therapy throughout British Columbia via secure video. Virtual therapy is effective for parent coaching, goal review, and many skill-building activities, and removes the need to travel for families in smaller communities across BC.

Yes. We offer neurodiversity-affirming autism behaviour support in BC. Our approach does not aim to suppress autistic traits; it supports genuine communication, emotional regulation, and participation in whatever form is authentic for that child.

Duration varies based on the child's goals and how quickly skills develop. Some families see meaningful change within a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. We review progress regularly and adjust the plan so you are never stuck in a program that has stopped working.

Yes, consistently. Parent and caregiver coaching is a core part of every program. The strategies your child learns in sessions are most effective when reinforced at home, so we equip families with practical tools they can use every day.

Government funding programs generally cover Behavioural Therapy services for eligible individuals in British Columbia. Private insurance plans typically do not cover Behavioural Therapy, but we encourage families to check with their insurer in case their policy includes an exception. Our team can also help you understand available government funding options and eligibility.
