Worth a Conversation

Communication Differences That May Benefit From Support

Every child develops communication differently. A few patterns are worth a conversation with an SLP, especially if they show up alongside other autism traits.

We can’t diagnose autism; that assessment comes from a physician or psychologist. If you’re looking for that kind of evaluation, we’re glad to help you figure out the right next step. Attention and focus differences often show up alongside these signs. If that sounds familiar, our ADHD condition page breaks down what to look for.

Know the Difference

Autism and Speech Delay: What's the Difference?

These two get mixed up constantly, so here's the plain version.

Speech delay

A speech delay usually means your child is developing language later than expected, though every child's path looks a little different. Some children catch up on their own; others benefit from extra support along the way.

Autism

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference shaping how a person thinks and connects. Some autistic children talk early; others are nonspeaking and communicate just as fully through other means.

A child can have a speech delay without being autistic, and an autistic child can have completely typical speech. Neither one is a flaw to correct. Both just tell us where to start.

Our Expertise

Autism Social Communication Therapy

Autism shows up differently in every child we work with. Here's how it can look, and what support actually does for each one.

Nonspeaking Communication

We build functional communication through AAC devices, picture systems, gestures, and spoken words together, whichever combination helps your child get heard.

Social Communication

Support for reading social cues, taking turns in conversation, and connecting with peers, on your child's own terms, never by asking them to mask.

Scripting and Echolalia

Repeating lines from a favourite show isn't meaningless; it's real language. We work with your child's natural patterns to build flexible, functional communication over time.

Sensory-Friendly Sessions

Therapy is paced to your child's sensory needs, so a loud or bright environment is far less likely to slow down progress.

Our Pediatric Speech Therapy program is built around how your child naturally communicates. Using Hanen, PROMPT Therapy, and Natural Language Acquisition, we support your child’s authentic voice instead of asking them to sound like everyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before booking, most parents want a clearer picture of how autism speech therapy works. Here's what we cover most often.

01 What are common signs of autism speech delay?

Not responding to their name, limited babbling or gestures, and a strong pull toward repeating phrases from shows are common early signs. Every child looks different, so an assessment is the clearest next step.

If your child is autistic and communication feels hard, frustrating, or one-sided, speech therapy can help, whether they're nonspeaking, minimally verbal, or fluent but struggling with back-and-forth conversation.

No. A child can have a speech delay without being autistic, and an autistic child can have completely typical speech. Some kids have both, and we plan for that overlap. It's also worth knowing that speech-language pathologists assess and support communication; we don't diagnose autism. If a diagnosis is what you're looking for, we can help point you toward the right professional.

Echolalia is repeating words or phrases someone has heard before, often from a favourite show or a parent's own sentence. It's a normal and meaningful part of autistic communication, not something we try to eliminate. (More on this in our upcoming piece on echolalia and autism speech therapy.)

Yes. We build communication in whatever form works for your child, including AAC devices, gestures, or pictures, alongside any spoken language goals.

Many BC families use funding sources such as the Autism Funding Unit, the Children and Youth with Support Needs (CYSN) program, extended health benefits, or private funding toward sessions. Eligibility and coverage depend on your child's situation and your specific plan, so we recommend confirming your options during your free consultation.

Yes. We come to your home across Greater Vancouver, and we offer virtual sessions anywhere in BC.

We talk with you about your child, observe how they naturally communicate, and walk you through what we found in plain language, no jargon.

Your Child's Voice Starts Here

However your child communicates today, autism speech therapy meets them there and builds from it. The next step is finding out what that looks like for your family.
